Christina Sadovnikov is an artist/forager/community caretaker currently crafting a life in Richmond, VA (Pamunkey land). Her art practice bridges the disciplines of craft, low-technology, sculpture and installation. Her work typically features materials that carry convoluting time scales and function differently to their preconceived properties. These materials take on the form of weightless rocks, sticks that melt when burned, coins that will never tarnish, and fabric that dissolves quickly with water. In the process of material bending, she questions how we come to recognize the materiality of place and of our own bodies today. Her work dances through the possibilities of forging generative relationships with the objects that surround us, collective memories, and the places we are continuously shaping.
Christina graduated with a BFA in Craft and Material Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has been a resident at Mass MoCA for the Assets for Artists Residency Program and at Gullkistan Center for Creativity in Iceland. She has been awarded the Merit Scholarship through Oxbow School of Art, the Outstanding Student Award through the Surface Design Association, and the Student Fellowship through Arrowmont School of Crafts. Her work has been shown in a variety of places such as the James River Park System, Studio Two Three, Anderson Gallery, and Fried Fruit Gallery. Currently, Christina is organizing group art exhibitions in odd places across Virginia.
